The Curious Career of

Typhoid Mary

a musical feast in two acts

MSM Productions presents an original and electrifying new musical that will transport you
back through time to unveil the enigmatic life of one of history's most notorious figures –
Typhoid Mary

Typhoid Mary, whose real name was Mary Mallon, was an Irish immigrant cook in early 20th century New York City. She was an asymptomatic carrier of the bacteria that causes typhoid fever. She infected numerous people in households where she worked, causing several outbreaks of typhoid. Pursued relentlessly by Dr George Soper, a dogmatic and overly zealous sanitary engineer, Mary was identified as the source of the infections. She was forcibly quarantined on North Brother Island, but later released on the condition that she would not work as a cook. However, she broke her promise and resumed cooking, leading to further outbreaks and deaths until her eventual re-capture. Mary spent the rest of her life in quarantine on North Brother Island.

This riveting new musical is an artful blend of fact and fiction, full of humour and poignant human drama. It is packed with original heart-rending ballads, spine-tingling duets and soaring ensemble pieces; the orchestral scoring is lush but adaptable to requirements. These songs will resonate with contemporary audiences all too familiar with the tragic outbreaks of both AIDS/HIV and more recently, Covid-19. Powered by a gripping, fast-paced narrative and engaging and relatable characters, The Curious Career Of Typhoid Mary sweeps us up into Mary’s struggle to survive repeated mistreatment within an uncaring, patriarchal society and her demonization by the sensationalist media. She becomes a symbol of fear and hatred - a ‘monster’ - a label that has a permanent and devastating impact upon her life. While we understand the scientific correctness of George’s insistence that Mary stop cooking, we are also moved by Mary’s resilience in the face of overwhelming adversity, including the tragic loss of both her baby and her loving companion Theo. Mary remains steadfast in her pursuit of independence; she constantly struggles to redefine herself, and reclaim her story.

Full of sparkling dialogue and unforgettable songs, The Curious Career of Typhoid Mary is a passionate, heart-rending exploration of a feisty individual versus the cold, unbending realities of society and science.

Typhoid Mary; Victim or Villain? The proof is in the pudding!
